Our WorkFit program is our answer to the industry’s Work Conditioning/Work Hardening offerings. Through WorkFit, we are hoping to provide early intervention, which reduces time missed from work and promotes quicker healing.
Our WorkFit program is an intensive, goal oriented program aimed to help the patient return to work as quickly as possible. We utilize a comprehensive treatment approach focusing on improving strength, endurance, flexibility, cardiovascular endurance and work abilities. Most WorkFit patients attend 3-5 days per week for 3-4 hours per day. This allows us to transition the patient from acute physical therapy back into the work force by simulating work specific duties.
Throughout the program, we communicate the patient’s capacity, limitations, and progress to the physician, the employer, and the insurance provider so that all parties have a clear picture of how well the patient can perform the specific job.
Who may benefit from a WorkFit (Work Conditioning) Referral
- Patient has “maxed out” in traditional therapy services, but is not ready to return to work.
- Patient was a goal of returning back to work in some capacity.
- Demonstrates a willingness to participate in the program.
- Not working full duty; available to participate in a program for several hours per day.
- Unable to currently meet job demands
Functional Capacity Evaluations
A Functional Capacity Evaluation (FCE) is a detailed evaluation to assess the patient’s current functional status taking into account musculoskeletal deficits, caridovascular deficits, functional abilities, self-perception, material handling, and other return to work obstacles.
The goals of a FCE are to document the results of the functional testing, document validity and effort, and determine the maximum, safe capabilities of the patient to allow them to re-enter the work force. FCE’s are also valuable in assisting case managers and physicians with providing accurate restrictions for the patient to return to work. Types of FCE’s include: General FCE, Upper/Lower extremity specific FCE, Job-specific FCE, or Disability FCE.

For over 15 years, Downtown Physical Therapy has performed Functional Capacity Evaluations and established a reputation with physicians, case managers and insurers for timely results, and thorough, clear reports that are reliable and objective.
Impairment Rating Performance
An impairment rating is an estimate of the severity of human impairment based on acceptable medical standards. Impairment is a deviation from normal in a body part or organ system and in the manner in which it functions. Impairment ratings are typically performed once an individual has been determined by a physician to be at MMI (Maximum Medical Improvement). We are trained in the performance of AMA 6th Edition Guides to the Evaluation of Permanent Impairment and conduct these evaluations for various musculoskeletal conditions at the request of physicians, insurance carriers, and case managers.
Upon completion of all physician-prescribed rehabilitation, Downtown Physical Therapy will evaluate the employee in a process similar to the pre-placement screening. This screening will assist in determining readiness to return to work, or assessment for any additional areas of concern. This process should more effectively assure that the worker has completed the full treatment and is ready and capable of returning to his previous position. This will also assist the employer in making any modifications of the position or work site as may be appropriate.
The return-to-work assessment includes a functional evaluation of essential critical demands, a musculoskeletal screening, and testing of the following areas:
- Cardiovascular (heart rate, blood pressure, respiration)
- Flexibility and posture (neck, trunk, shoulders, elbows, hands/fingers, hips, kneed, ankles)
- Manual muscle tests (upper and lower extremities and trunk; may include push/pull, lifts, and carries)
- Job specific tasks – critical demand measurements.
These areas will be assessed and compared to the functional job description for the position to which the employee is trying to return. A report is generated stating if the individual is ready to resume his/her previous work position.
